Colchester: alcohol at pub again
A PUB was back selling alcohol just 24 hours after its licence was revoked.
The Huntsmans Tavern in Shrub End Road, Colchester, was banned from selling booze after police and Colchester Council licensing officials found it had been without a designated premises supervisor (DPS) since November 2007. It was ordered to only serve soft drinks at noon on Thursday, but by Friday lunchtime pints of beer were being pulled again.
A Colchester Council spokesman confirmed that the pub's alcohol licence had been returned.

What is that supposed to mean- they will soon be referring to Publicans as [italic]dehydration restriction administrators[/italic]. What fool is employed to think these new, but pointless, terms up?
Anyway, the pub is now serving beer.... the first round is on me... cheers!

Typical of the Gazette to print technical jargon without an explanation. Probably as their researchers are not up to much cop!!
A designated premises supervisor is a legal requirement for public houses in which the licensee is not always present or does not live on the premises (most of the modern watering holes in town).
This person is responsible in the same way as a shifty manager would be in a factory for example. This person does not have the full responsibility of a licensee but is the one responsible if there are any troubles such as fights, underage drinking etc.
In other words a supervisor. This role requires a qualified & approved person not just a student earning beer money by doing a couple of shifts. Interesting how they found such a person in less than 24 hours. But come on Gazette, where is the real news???????

DOES NOT have to be the licence holder. its is a legal position that must be held in order to adhere to the conditions of any premises licence. To trade without one is totally illegal!!

This pub should be closed down permanently. Late night loud music and the bad behaviour of customers is a disgrace. I find it hard to believe that anyone is supervising anything there.
