Police have vowed to reclaim the streets from drink-fuelled yobs.

Just one day after the Gazette highlighted a trail of debris left behind by boozed-up revellers, police have pledged to increase their presence.

Extra police officers will be on the streets of Clacton through the summer, and have warned drunks there will be no second chances.

I bet they will be Community police officers, overweight, uniforms that are to big for them who can’t get another job.

Let’s get tough on the thugs and bring in laws that will make them and their parents pay (if under 16)…………bang them up.

What is needed is the BORSTAL mentality for these types. Steal a car, commit an ABH, Damage Someones property, then its 3 months first instance in the borstal where the days activities are 'manual work skills' like workshop etc. None of this '2 hours community penalty writing an apology to the victim' nonsense. The book should literally be thrown at them for the first offence as a shock to the system. Then the punishment should be doubled up every time recidivism occurs. The whole criminal justice system needs to be overhauled so there are property penalties for criminal behaviour. I guarantee this, 3 months of a 'borstal' style experience for the first offence and you can bet recidivism will drop to almost 0%. Sure you will still get the career criminals and the police and concentrate resources on them, instead of repeatedly chasing after the army of workshy people that they currently chase after who know they can get away with any 'non violent' crime and will never see jail time even for repeated burglaries etc.

Oh yes, get the Pretend Policemen on the case - they will sort them out!

The trail of debris highlighted by the Gazette was three separate incidents.

The fury they mentioned yesterday was unsubstantiated. This report has no details on the number of extra police or where they will be deployed.

S**t journalism all round really. But at least James Dwan had the balls to put his name to the article.

In other words - Police admit they haven't been doing their job.

All we hear is crack on this, crack down on that. If they were out on the streets doing real police work instead sat collecting stats to ensure they were politically correct they wouldn't need to crack down.

Thanks Hughie. So, it's a minibus of coppers in Clacton City Centre on weekend evenings. Can't really see them stopping the trail of destruction across the entire Tendring district that the Gazette ran yesterday.

Brian, Copford says...

It's not the fault of the police that the same people are causing trouble week after week be it in Clacton or Colchester. The fact is that Scottish Gordon wants to build loads of flats but hardly any prison places in comparason. Therefore, when police nick a drunken thug, he goes to court and is not remanded and is back on the very next Friday night. Laura (above) is right, we need detension places and the courts to use them. With regard to PCSO's, yes its a political scam on numbers but I would rather 2 PCSO's on the corner with Radios than nothing at all which would be the other option with this government!

Norm, Colchester says...

So we convert the empty flats into prisons? Sorted

Question is Norm, have you got the balls to put your entire and real name on your comments or are you going to hide behind the same anonymity that you accuse the Gazette reporters of hiding behind?

I am employed by the Gazette as Online Editorial Director & Community Forum Evangelist. It pays two apples, half a kit kat and a pint of cider per week. They did offer to have James 'Bash The' Bishop serve me the cider while wearing his gimp outfit, but I politely turned them down.

.......and where exactly is this story incorrect?

Norm Smith, Colchester says...

Today: "a trail of debris left behind by boozed-up revellers."

Yesterday: "Yobs have also been blamed for killing cygnets near St Osyth."

Boozed-up revellers are not really renowned for killing cygnets are they?

The extra police presence is in Clacton town centre according to the police website.

The 'trail of debris' story in the Gazette yesterday referred to four incidents in Tendring in Frinton, St Osyth, Manningtree and Clacton.

So, the extra police in Clacton town centre will be able to deal with just one of the incidents a 'day after the Gazette highlighted a trail of debris left behind by boozed-up revellers'.

What incident will the extra police in Clacton town centre be able to keep an eye on?

"Previously, a youth was caught on CCTV pouring bubble bath in the Clacton fountain. The fountain had to be drained."

This story is a crock of s**t. The links are tenuous in the extreme, the reporting is weak, there is no effort to achieve any depth or value-add.

Norm AKA Bob - you are just missing the bigger picture in this all.

Clacton in the summer will see a rise in crime, most of it drink fuelled.

For starters you have more holiday makers in the resort, you have students back from University plus you have got bored school kids with nothing much to do.

Mix that with readily available booze for them all and you have problems.

If the truth be known the problems out of season aren't alot better than what will be coming up.

Drunken teenagers and drunken locals are always causing problems on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

At the moment the Police are already overstretched on those nights.

If there is an incident in the town it is highly likely that it will go unchecked because the Police are dealing with another one somewhere else.

If things go unchecked in town because of lack of resources what hope is there of getting to other areas to sort their problems out?

If the Police can genuinely stamp out the problems with a zero tolerance campaign as suggested it will free up manpower to sort problems out elsewhere.

You have to start somewhere and if the first battle ground is Clacton's new town square so be it.

Norm Smith NOT Bob, Colchester says...
4:57pm Thu 3 Jul 08

So, you agree Bertie Bishop that the expanded police presence will do nothing to prevent the incidents in the trail of destruction that the Gazette wrote about yesterday?

Why should the majority of law abiding citizens feel driven out of Clacton's town centre by a minority group of ill-mannered individuals? I support the proposed, robust, zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour. It will send a clear message to to locals and visitors, that Clacton is a town to be enjoyed by all ages, at any time of the day. Using the dispersal order, confiscating alcohol and giving no second chances will soon get the message across.

Ok, lets get back to the story, its the reason we post on here.(isn`t it ? )
"Just one day after the Gazette highlighted a trail of debris left behind by boozed-up revellers, police have pledged to increase their presence."
Well, in one week of strong sun, or was that strong cider (or both)
we had an arrest or 2, a police cars window smashed, and local civil type war on 2 side by side streets in Jaywick.
Ok now your going to say, ah, its Jaywick.
BUT.
EVERY part of our lifes communities now has some sort of trouble or other.
Holland on sea has its fair share of asbo`s,
Frinton is deluged with "teenage yobbish louts"
Walton has its street racers, Colchester has so many i lost count...and the list goes on and on..
WHY...
WHY has it all gone pete tong wrong...
We read we are getting 600 more bobbies on the beat soon.
where from, not out of a lucky dip bag thats for sure.
I know one PCSO thats good at his job, both jobs infact.
h
He has respect from both his "employers"
He has tried on many occasions to be a full time bobbie, with different forces, but gets turned down, every time..
WHY...
If we get them 600 new bobbies on the streets, you will get the "civil liberties mob going - too much police on the streets - big brothers watching you, and all that sort of "dont look at me, i`ve done nothing wrong"
But the facts are, someone somewhere is doing something wrong, something even as you read this.
Go look out your windows, unless you live in the middle of knowhere, you will have trouble outside your home sooner or later, its statistics, fact, truth or whatever you DONT want to call it..
Wake up, look out, think about it....
Lawlesness or Lawfulness...
I`d much prefur the 2nd option.

The Real World, says...
11:45pm Thu 3 Jul 08

Six hundred extra officers and how many street corners in Essex? They will never be able to be everywhere at once, so obviously crimes will still happen.
Let's support our officers and have some faith instead of being so pessimistic.
I also support the zero-tolerance approach in dear old Clacton-on-Sea, which has the potential to be a far safer and pleasnt place to visit.

Josie, Holland on Sea says...

I agree with Laura - short sharp punishment at the first offence might help to prevent these continuing problems.

However, it is not just in Clacton town centre that this happens. I live in a normally quiet residential street, but on a friday and saturday night it all kicks off with a 15 year old youth who has been drinking. I know his mother gives him money and the 19 year old who is 2 doors down goes to the shop in the village and buys him his alcohol!

The police and council have been called many times over the past 3 years but so far nothing has been done. The council's last letter in reply to me was 'we are working with the police and other agencies to rectify this problem'. Also they sent one of their diary forms for me to complete. What a load of bo**ocks as usual. The family have been warned off so there will be no disruption in the next 3 weeks, but we wait for the next outburst from the family from hell!!!!!!!!

Rant over (for the moment).

James Bishop, Essex says...
11:28am Fri 4 Jul 08

Norm - I agree that initially it will make not one bit of difference to problems outside of Clacton.

But and it is a big BUT, this could be a start to solving many problems in the district.

As long as Police are tied up in Clacton where the vast majority of the trouble is they will have little time to get out to other towns and villages. If you succeed in reducing crime here, you will lower the need for Police to be in this area and free them up to sort problems elsewhere.

This is very similar to what New York has done by taking a zero tolerance attitude to crime and they have had remarkable success.

Now this is where I put another BUT in.

New York really has a zero tolerance approach and pushed the problem from one area to another area and followed it up there and pushed it further and further out. In Frinton, a lot of the trouble makers here are reputed to be the same that were driven out of Walton a year or so ago.

The Police failed to follow up their actions there and so Frinton suffers. Same with the boy racers that used to blight Clacton’s town centre. They were driven away from there and ended up on the industrial estate and the Police took a long time following it up.

For this to succeed there needs to be a lot more effective Policing and sentencing from Judges.

The opportunity is here with extra resources, let us not see it wasted.

Some very well thought out responses (Mr. Bishop stands out) but I feel there is yet another component not discussed.

Why do younger members of our society ("our" because I am a Brit from Essex) behave in this menner? Isn't it because of the up-bringing they've had?

Respect for myself AND others as well as other people's property was insdtilled in me as a kid. Oh - don't get me wrong. I have done my fair share of egregious wrongs but in teenage vim and vigor. And I was caught and the behaviour was altered. More from my parents than from the ramifications of the court. THAT is where the real problem lies, my friends.

Nothing will change until we rid ourselves of the socialist mentality that encourages an attitude of entitlement. Work for a living. Earn your respect. Pay for your "toys". And pay for your misdemeanors.

And quit blaming the schools, church or government for your own shortcomings. Remember, your government is YOUR representatives: give 'em hell if they're charing you too much tax or imjplementing stupid, outdated and outmoded policies.

Oh - and for the love of god - get rid of the useless "Trusts" managing your equalloy useless NHS and privatise them. Remove the National Health Insurance tarriff and allow the marketplace to determine the sdtandard of service you get. Like here.
