Miriam Stead, head of heritage and arts at Essex County Council, will be writing a regular blog for the Gazette from China.
The council chief is visiting the Jiansgu Province to collect 43 miniature terracotta figures. She is bringing them to Colchester as part of the Essex-Jiangsu Festival, celebrating Essex's 20-year link with the province.
It is the first time the figures, which are 2,000 years old and represent soldiers, officials, dancers, musicians and cavalry horses, have visited the UK.
