A bungalow went up in flames just hours before it was going to be auctioned.
Firefighters were called to the chalet in Tamarisk Way, Jaywick, yesterday at 3.10am.
Two crews from Clacton fire station attended and took 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze, using two sets of breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet.
It is understood the property is unoccupied.
It was due to go under the hammer yesterday at 2.15pm at Goldings Auctions, in Ipswich.
The timber frame two-bedroom detached bungalow had a guide price of between £20,000 and £25,000.
It was described as an “ideal investment opportunity for a residential portfolio” or a holiday home.
A spokesman for Goldings auctioneers said the lot did not sell at auction but a bid has been received and it was expected to be sold today.
The bungalow is in the Jaywick Village area of the resort.
A fire service investigation into the blaze is under way.
