Work on making the top community garden in Britain’s even better is under way.

The garden outside Frinton’s railway cottage was crowned the winner in the first Britain’s Best Flowerbed competition.

Pupils from Tendring Technology College and members of other town groups, under the guidance of Frinton in Bloom, started work on the award-winning amenity.

The five-bed garden has been designed by Rethna Flaxman and is benefiting from a £7,000 grant awarded to Frinton in Bloom from the National Lottery’s Awards for All scheme.

David Foster, Frinton in Bloom chairman, said: “It’s an important site because it’s the first thing you see when you enter the town and the last thing when you leave.

“The aim is for it to be attractive and low maintenance at the same time.

“It is there for the good of the community and it is a long-term project, so it was good to see so many people involved today.”

The Royal Horticultural Society launched the competition in April, inviting anyone who was part of a green team to enter their displays into local authority, community group and school categories.

Frinton’s entry was described as “a brightly- coloured bed cared for by local volunteers”.

Deputy show manager Jenny Jenner said: “The quality of beds in the inaugural Britain’s Best Flower Bed competition has been incredible.”

Frinton picked up the best small town title, a silver gilt award, a gold award for its station and the Triangle Shopping Centre won the best sustainable/drought garden category in the Anglia in Bloom competition.

In the national contest, Frinton won a silver award in the small town category.
