The Maldon Mud Race is proving to be more popular than ever.

A record number of entries have been received for the event, which is being held on Sunday, January 4, at Promenade Park, Maldon.

Michael Ballard, secretary of the Maldon Mud Race Committee, said he is delighted that entries have already reached capacity, nearly two weeks ahead of the closing date.

He said: “This is particularly exciting as, having considered all health and safety aspects, the committee agreed to increase the number of entrants from the previous 180 to 250, 70 more places than in previous years.”

Last year’s Mud Race raised £10,000 in sponsorship for each of its three main charities – Essex Air Ambulance, Little Havens Children’s Hospice, and the Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity.

In addition, more than £15,000 was given to 20 different charities nominated by competitors.

This year’s charities are Essex Air Ambulance, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Little Havens Children’s Hospice and The Princess Royal Trust For Carers.

The mud race is organised by the International Lions and Rotary Clubs of Maldon, supported by Maldon District Council, and sponsored by Wilkin and Sons jam factory in Tiptree, and Redrow Homes.

The committee is still looking for sponsors to advertise on the screens projecting the race to an expected audience of more than 5,000 spectators.

If you are interested call Michael Ballard on 01621 891105, or publicity director John Scott on 01245 222673.
